Biographical / Historical

The Bristol Jewish Center was founded in 1904 by ten Jewish families that initially held religious services in the rear of a tailor shop on Mill Street in Bristol, Pennsylvania. In 1917, the synagogue bought a building at 119 Pond Street and remained there until 1949. It was in 1949 that four Jewish families donated land at 216 Pond Street for the building of a larger sanctuary to accommodate the growing Jewish population in Bristol between World War I and the end of World War II. During the 1970s and 1980s, the synagogue underwent several changes, including becoming an Adult Synagogue, affiliating with the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia, and furthering the roles of women in the synagogue with a female Rabbi. In 2015, the Bristol Jewish Center’s Bristol location closed and completely merged with the Kol Emet Congregation in Yardley, Pennsylvania, where they now serve as one entity.
