Joseph P. Cuttone Photographs and Clippings Collection

 Collection
Identifier: GA.BH.10

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photographs taken by Cuttone, as well as older original photographs collected by Cuttone, and sometimes copies of those photographs. There are large numbers of photographic prints, mostly circa 1980s-1995, and negatives, circa 1950s-1980s. The photographs taken by Cuttone depict Bristol landmarks and local events, as well as personal photographs (such as weddings he attended). Some of the photographs have been sorted by subject, and some are in the original developers' sleeves by date.

The older photographs Cuttone collected date from circa 1880-1940. It seems that most of the photographs were local--Bristol sports teams, parades, and the like--but some are unidentified.

There are also a small number of newspaper clippings in the collection, primarily from the 1980s and relating to Bristol history and local events.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Peter Cuttone (1915-2010) was a life-long Bristol resident, a barber, and an amateur photographer and local historian. Cuttone bought his first camera, a Roloflex, in 1930, and continued taking pictures for the rest of his life.

Joseph was the oldest child of Andrew Cuttone, a farmer, and Francesca, a worker at Steel’s Woolen Mill. Joseph graduated from Bristol High School in 1935 and began working as a turret lathe operator at the Hunter Manufacturing Company. He was drafted into the Navy in 1943, but received a medical discharge. After attending Brownie's Barber School in Trenton, Cuttone was hired by the Mannherz Barber Shop, where he worked almost until his death.

Cuttone and his wife, Catharine R. nee Vitale, had two daughters together.

Cuttone was active in the Italian-American community in Bristol and the Bristol Pentecostal Church (aka Bristol Assembly of God). He ran for public office several times.

Processing Information

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact the Grundy Archivist directly for more information.
